What is Open Source Software?
Open source software (OSS) is publicly available software whose source code can be freely inspected, modified and redistributed. This enables a decentralised, collaborative development model and stands in contrast to proprietary solutions, which are often more expensive, less flexible and dependent on individual vendors.
For higher-education institutions OSS offers many advantages: tailored adaptation, long-term usability and secure digital sovereignty, since there are no hidden subscription or licence fees.
