HISTORY OF ELAN E.V.

An Association for Modern Higher Education

elan e.V. was founded in 2008 as a continuation of the E-Learning funding programme E-Learning Academic Network Niedersachsen (ELAN), which was carried out by the state of Lower Saxony for its universities from 2002 to 2009 in three phases.

The aim of the programme was not only to build a statewide network of universities engaged in shaping e-learning but also to develop infrastructure for digital teaching and to create digital learning content..

To preserve the knowledge gained through the ELAN programme and to continue making it available to universities in Lower Saxony, elan e.V. was founded on 20 October 2008 by seven universities. The association was established in close coordination with the Ministry of Science and Culture. The founding members were the following universities in Lower Saxony:

  • Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig (HBK)
  • Fachhochschule Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel (Ostfalia)
  • Technical University of Clausthal
  • Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg
  • University of Osnabrück
  • Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences
  • University of Vechta

Today, elan e.V. is an important player in the development and operation of modern open-source software solutions for digital teaching — well beyond the borders of Lower Saxony.
